How do I use Compress to 200 KB?
Prepare a photo for a form that sets a 200 KB file-size limit. The preset checks against 200,000 bytes. Match the form's accepted format and pixel dimensions as well as its byte limit; compressing alone does not guarantee that a form will accept the image.
- Check the form's accepted file type and pixel dimensions, then choose your still JPG, PNG, or WebP image.
- The 200 KB target is already selected. Choose an output format and enable smaller dimensions only if you want them.
- Check the measured bytes, dimensions, and preview. Download a result within the 200 KB target; if the form requires exact dimensions, use Resize image and check the file size again.
Still JPG, PNG, and WebP images are supported. Each image can be up to 25 MB, 24 megapixels, and 8,192 pixels on either side. Your original file is never changed.
What should I know before using this tool?
Is 200 KB guaranteed?
The target is a maximum, not an exact size. 200 KB means 200,000 bytes. If the image cannot fit with your settings, the result clearly says Over target. Allow smaller dimensions or choose another format and try again.
Will my image dimensions change?
Dimensions stay unchanged unless you enable Allow smaller dimensions if needed. If enabled, the compressor can reduce width and height together to help reach the target.
Why isn't my PNG getting smaller?
PNG uses lossless compression and does not have a lossy quality slider here. Re-encoding an already optimized PNG can make it larger. WebP can give a smaller result while retaining transparency; JPG is suitable for opaque photos.
Does compression remove metadata?
Images that are re-encoded through the canvas do not carry their original EXIF metadata. If a file already meets the target and uses the selected format, it is returned unchanged, including its metadata.
Why might a form reject an image under 200 KB?
A form can also require a particular format, width, height, or aspect ratio. Check those requirements alongside the measured file size. If you resize or crop the downloaded image afterward, check its file size again before submitting it.
Where can I learn more about image formats and browser tools?
JPEG uses lossy compression; PNG supports lossless compression and transparency. Choose a format that fits the image and where you will use it. MDN: Image file type and format guide.
WebP supports lossy and lossless compression, as well as transparency. Actual output size depends on the image and encoder settings. Google: WebP format overview.
